November 26 which is celebrated by those related to Indian legal field as ‘Law Day’ has been notified by the Government of India as ‘Constitution Day’. As is known, the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949 and was enforced two months later on January 26, 1950.
The gazette notification to this effect has been issued on November 19, 2015 by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment of the Ministry Of Social Justice And Empowerment. The notification notes that the current year is also witnessing the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar who had chaired the Constituent Assembly and played a pivotal role in the drafting of the Constitution of India.
Earlier on September 30, 2015, a commemorative stamp on Dr. BR Ambedkar was released jointly by Government of India as a part of the celebrations of his of 125th Birth Anniversary.
The ‘National Committee on Nationwide Celebration of 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’ chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had its first meeting on July 23, 2015. Government has said that the objective of year-long celebrations is to make the world aware about the life and the work of Dr. BR Ambekdar as a champion of the underprivileged

New Delhi, the 19th November, 2015F. No. 19022/11/2015-VI (E).— Whereas the people of India, having solemnly resolved to secure to all its citizens Justice, Liberty, Equality and to promote Fraternity among all, adopted, enacted and gave to themselves the Constitution of India in the Constituent Assembly on the 26th day of November, 1949 ;
And whereas the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, provided its invaluable services in drafting the Constitution of India and the nation is celebrating the One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Birth Anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in recognition of his contribution to building modern India;
Now, therefore, the Government of India has decided to celebrate the 26th day of the November of every year as the “CONSTITUTION DAY” to promote constitutional values among citizens.
