The Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India has notified that the Delhi High Court Amendment Act, 2015, which had received the assent of the President of India on August 10, 2015 has been brought into force from today i.e. October 26, 2015.
The Act provides for enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction of the District Courts of Delhi from ₹ 20 lakh to ₹ 2 crore. The last revision of pecuniary jurisdiction of District Courts in Delhi was done in 2003, when it was raised from ₹ 5 lakh to ₹ 20 lakh.
Amendment:
5. Jurisdiction of High Court
(2) Notwithstanding anything contained in any law for the time being in force, the High Court of Delhi shall also have in respect of the said territories ordinary original civil jurisdiction in every suit the value of which exceeds rupees two crore.
In an official press release, Ministry of Law & Justice said that increasing the pecuniary jurisdiction of Districts Courts of Delhi would lessen the burden of Delhi High Court and there would be substantive improvement in disposal of cases in subordinate Courts. As per the ministry, change in jurisdiction will facilitate access of the general public to 11 district courts located in sic district court complexes within the vicinity of their location, ensuring speedy justice to the litigants at their door steps.
