Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was appointed to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019. Justice Gavai is due to retire on November 23, 2025. He will serve as a judge of the Supreme Court for approximately 6 years and 6 months.

Enrollment: Justice Gavai enrolled with the bar on March 16, 1985.

As a lawyer: Justice Gavai initially worked with the late Barrister Raja S. Bhonsale, former Advocate General and Judge of the Bombay High Court, until 1987. From 1987 to 1990, he practiced independently at the Bombay High Court. Thereafter, he primarily practiced before the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, specializing in Constitutional Law and Administrative Law. He also served as Standing Counsel for several municipal corporations, including Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Amravati Municipal Corporation, as well as autonomous bodies and universities.

Parent High Court: Bombay High Court.

High Court: Justice Gavai was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003, and was made a permanent judge on November 12, 2005. During his tenure, he presided over various assignments at the Principal Seat in Mumbai and benches at Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji.

Supreme Court: Justice Gavai was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019. He is expected to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India if the seniority convention is followed.
