The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 was passed by Lok Sabha on 11 December 2019 and by Rajya Sabha on 12 December 2019. The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) was notified on 11 January 2020.
The first petition challenging the CAA was filed on 13 December 2019 by Indian Union of Muslim League and four Members of Parliament (MP), (Indian Union of Muslim League & Ors. v. Union of India & Ors – WP (C) No. 1470/2019) and by TMC MP Mahua Moitra (Mahua Moitra v. Union of India & Ors – WP (C) No. 1466/2019). Several other petitions also came to be filed shortly thereafter.
