Pranab Mukherjee being the President of India is the constitutional head of the Republic of India. Lately, the President who himself holds a degree in law has found himself dealing with happening associated with the Constitution of India:
“Don’t teach me the Constitution”
Nitish Kumar, former Chief Minister of Bihar probably did not get the relief he sought from the Governor of Bihar and hence stormed to New Delhi and paraded his MLAs before the President. These MLAs belong to JD(U), RJD and Congress. Congress general secretary C P Joshi who was a part of the delegation was holding forth on Constitutional provisions regarding the role of a Governor when pat came a snub from Mukherjee. “Don’t teach me the Constitution,” the President told Joshi, who just froze thereafter. Do not deviate from Constitutional Principles
In his opening remark at the 46th Governors Conference in New Delhi, the President said Constitution was the only guiding document for providing framework for governance and asked governors to ensure peace and communal harmony. He said:
“Every Indian looks forward to the Constitution as the guarantor of liberties, freedom and equality. Any deviation from the principles and provisions embodied in the Constitution would weaken the democratic fabric of the country and jeopardise the social, economic and political well-being of our citizens.”[Indian Express]
